Start with why you want the time
Tell him why this matters to you. You might say, “The years have moved quickly. I want us to have time for real conversations before the next season begins.” You do not need a polished introduction. Invite him to grow alongside you.
Ask what he hopes for
Ask which questions, skills or experiences he would like to explore. Listen without immediately turning his answer into a lesson. Make room for uncertainty. He may need time to decide what to share.
Agree on a practical rhythm
Choose your usual meeting time, an accessible place and a backup plan. Decide how you will communicate changes. Keep activities and costs realistic. A dependable lunch or walk can be a useful beginning.
Open the Bible together
Read the week’s full passage rather than an isolated verse. Ask what it says and what questions it raises. Share your own story with humility. You are also learning to follow Christ.
Finish with one next step
Choose one action and the next meeting date. Pray simply. You do not have to cover everything at the first meeting; give yourselves a reason to come back.
